Anthropic's Claude API adds server-side message threads in beta

Anthropic's beta message threads keep a conversation on the server so agent loops send only new messages; threads expire 5 minutes after the last request.

Anthropic added message threads to the Claude Messages API in beta on 2 November 2026, according to its platform release notes. A thread keeps a conversation on Anthropic's servers, so a long agent loop no longer uploads the whole history on every turn. Anthropic says this gives smaller requests and a lower time to first token. The feature is on the Claude API, Claude Platform on AWS, Claude Models on Google Cloud (Anthropic managed) and Claude in Microsoft Foundry.

How it works

You send the first request in full, with system prompt, tools and messages, and add a thread parameter of type create. On later turns you send only the new messages and the id of the previous response, with type continue. Anthropic's documentation says the API rebuilds the conversation before calling the model and that most validation and tokenising work then covers only the new turn.

The documentation says threads help most in long agent loops, where every turn otherwise re-sends and re-validates the full conversation. It does not publish a latency figure or a price change. Update, 3 November 2026: Anthropic's announcement post on the Claude blog now gives a figure, a median time-to-first-token drop of about 35% for requests of 500k to 1M tokens; see our follow-up.

Constraints to plan around

  • Short life. A thread expires 5 minutes after its last request and is deleted no more than 1 hour after last use. A continue request on an expired thread returns a 404 error, and you replay the full conversation in a new create request.
  • Best-effort storage. No response tells you whether a turn was stored; you find out on the next continue request. Anthropic tells developers to keep their own copy of every message and build the replay path from the start.
  • Fixed settings. Model, tool choice, thinking, MCP servers, context management and the beta headers must match the create request, or the API returns a 400 error (thread_fingerprint_mismatch). System prompt and tools are sent on create only; sending either on a continue request returns a 400.
  • Append-only. Each response id can be continued once, so editing or branching an earlier message means starting a new thread.
  • Caching is separate. A thread does not cache your prompt for you; you still place cache breakpoints, with a maximum of 4 per threaded request.

The data-handling catch

The documentation lists message threads as not eligible for zero data retention and not eligible for HIPAA. Because the server holds the conversation, a team with a ZDR agreement or health data should keep those workloads on ordinary full-history requests until that changes.

Two other changes in the same notes

On 29 October Anthropic launched a beta Usage and Cost Analytics API that reports token usage and cost for Claude Console and Claude Enterprise organisations, filterable by model, workspace, API key and the user or service account behind a request. The older Usage and Cost API and several Enterprise Analytics endpoints are now legacy but remain supported.

On 30 October Anthropic deprecated fast mode for Claude Opus 4.8, with removal on 30 November 2026. After that date requests to claude-opus-4-8 with speed set to fast return an error, and Anthropic says to migrate to Claude Opus 5.5 to keep fast mode.

DiscussIf your agents run long loops, would you accept a 5-minute thread life and no ZDR eligibility for a smaller request, and how would you test the saving?
Discussion
The short version
  • Anthropic added message threads to the Messages API in beta on 2 November 2026 (header message-threads-2026-08-12): after a first full request, each turn sends only the new messages plus the previous response id.
  • A thread expires 5 minutes after its last request and is deleted within 1 hour of last use, so your application must keep its own copy of the conversation and be able to replay it after a 404 error.
  • Message threads are not eligible for zero data retention (ZDR) or HIPAA, according to Anthropic's documentation, which matters before you route regulated conversations through them.
  • Two other changes in the same release notes: a new Usage and Cost Analytics API (29 October) and the removal of fast mode for Claude Opus 4.8 on 30 November 2026.

Questions this article answers

What are Claude API message threads?

A beta Messages API feature, announced 2 November 2026, that keeps a conversation on Anthropic's server so each later request sends only the new messages and the previous response id.

How long does a Claude message thread last?

A thread expires 5 minutes after its last request and is deleted no more than 1 hour after its last use. After that a continue request returns a 404 error and the full conversation must be sent again.

Are Claude message threads covered by zero data retention?

No. Anthropic's documentation lists message threads as not eligible for zero data retention and not eligible for HIPAA.

When is fast mode removed for Claude Opus 4.8?

Anthropic says fast mode for Claude Opus 4.8 is deprecated and will be removed on 30 November 2026; requests with speed set to fast will then return an error.
